It has been believed that the tradition of wearing the Mangalsutra had begun around the 5th-6th centuries CE. The word ‘Mangalsutra’ has been derived from the Sanksrit. The term ‘Mangal’ signifies wealthy, fortunate, cheerful, and successful and ‘Sutra’ signifies ‘Cord’. Mangalsutra is an Auspicious & Divine Thread. As per Hindu Tradition, the ritual of the Mangalsutra ceremony is termed "Mangalya Dharanam" which means ‘Adorning The Auspicious’.
During the procession of Hindu marriage, the groom ties a holy thread around the neck of the bride which resembles the commitment & bond between two souls. Wearing a Mangalsutra after marriage is a custom in the Indian community.
Indian women who are married, love to ornate themselves with beautiful jewellery during various festivities and occasions. This holy and traditional piece of ornament has been crafted with different materials including gold, diamond, black beads and various precious gemstones. Mangalsutra is an essential part of every Hindu wedding. During the nuptials, the groom wraps a sacred thread around his would-be- bride’s neck. Sindoor, Bangles, Toe Ring, Nose Ring and Mangalsutra are considered the holy emblem of married Hindu women
Among all the other jewellery worn by a newlywed woman, the Mangalsutra is of the highest significance. The words ‘Mangal and Sutra’ both imply sacred thread. Therefore, as per Hindu custom, every married girl or woman should wear a Mangalsutra. It is said that it brings good fortune and prosperity to the newlywed couple.
The holy thread is a reminder of a woman's obligations to herself. Her spouse recognises his duty to her as a partner in a similar manner. The two make an oath of loyalty to one another. The belief is that the Mangalsutra represents a vow of love made by the husband and wife to remain together forever. A woman is considered to protect her wedded life from outside interference when she wears a Mangalsutra.
